Danteââ¬â¢s Inferno: Sixth Circle of Hell
Danteââ¬â¢s Inferno: Sixth Circle of Hell ââ¬Å"Every evil deed despised in Heaven has as its end injustice. Each such end harms someone else through either force or fraudâ⬠(Alighieri XI 22-24). In his divine comedy, The Inferno, Dante Alighieri cruises around the different circles of hell. Virgil, a poet and a good friend of Danteââ¬â¢s, becomes Danteââ¬â¢s guide in hell. Trough out the poem, the reader encounters certain moments of tension in which he or she is forced to choose a direction to follow. In Canto XI, Virgil and Dante find themselves in the sixth circle of hell: circle of violence. Virgil then explains to Dante that there are three inner circles: violence against others, violence against self, and fraud. In the second inner circle, the circle of suicide or violence against self, Virgil and Dante find a deserted forest with twisted weird looking trees. These trees are the people who reside in that circle. Here, the reader is presented with people who have committed suicide because of hardships in their lives. The reader is then presented with the opportunity to either feel sorry and justify their suicide or find their placement in hell a just punishment. In the second inner circle, violence against self, Dante and Virgil meet one of the residents. His name was Pier Delle Vigne, a former minister of Emperor Frederick II. Pier, then, tells Virgil and Dante that reason why he committed suicide was because envious groups schemed him, turned the Emperor against him, destroyed his reputation, and put him in prison; he was too ashamed and decided to take his life. Dante feels sorry for him, because he too understands the importance of a good reputation. At this point the reader is offered the chance to agree with Dante and feel sorry for Pier, or completely disagree. Life is one of the greatest gifts from God, keeping this in mind; suicide would be denying or not appreciating that gift. Everyone in hell is there because in one way or another they denied and committed a sin against God. Regardless of what others did to him, Pier denied God, so one can come to the conclusion that his positioning in hell is just. In the contrary, life or God does not give you more than you can handle. All the alse accusations made against Pier were obviously more than what he could handle, so one could feel sorry for him and justify his suicide. So it is up to the reader to choose one of the two possible opportunities that Dante the poet presents to us. In Danteââ¬â¢s divine comedy, The inferno, the reader is offered with many occasions where he or she is must choose a direction to follow. In the sixth circle of hell, the circle of violence, Virgil explains that there are three inner circles: circle of violence against others, circle of violence against self, and the circle of fraud. In the second inner circle Dante and Virgil meet Pier Delle Vigne. After listening to his story and explanation onto why he took his life, the reader had the option of agreeing with Dante and feeling sorry for Pierââ¬â¢s justified action or find Pierââ¬â¢s punishment just. Life is a gift of God, so taking oneââ¬â¢s life is committing a sin against God; which will make Pierââ¬â¢s punishment just. This conclusion could be made if the reader believes in God.

Deeper Insight by Use of Point of View – Summary
Deeper Insight by Use of Point of View The majority of authors use literary elements to build up their story. However, the author of the short story ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠uses one particular element to build up his own story in a very unique format. William Faulkner uses various literary elements in the story, but the most critical one is point of view. Faulkner uses point of view to develop characters, the theme, and the plot of the story.Faulknerââ¬â¢s use of point of view helps the reader understand who the characters are, how the characters develop, and aids in understanding the characters actions throughout the story. Faulkner uses a nonparticipant narrator as well as Sartyââ¬â¢s thoughts and views for point of view. This unique usage provides readers to infer and interpret the characters. This point of view raises an interesting question. Does the narrator defend Abner throughout the story? The illustration of the fire building passage provides us with proof of the d efense. â⬠¦that the element of fire spoke to some deep mainspring of his father's being, as the element of steel or of powder spoke to other men, as the one weapon for the preservation of integrity, else breath were not worth the breathing, and hence to be regarded with respect and used with discretion. â⬠(Yunis 1). The narrator speaks of Abnerââ¬â¢s use of fires as how he dealt with being in the lowest of low classes and his feeling of injustice. By the narrator focusing on the barn burnings in this way, it makes the reader feel sympathy for Sarty and the rest of his family without ever having to state it.Not only does it provide the reader with sympathy for the family, but also a better understanding of Abner. If the narrator did not inform us of the lowness of life Abner lived then the beating of his children, his unlawfulness, his disrespect, and his barn burning would just imply that he was evil. Abner was indeed a very evil man, but the defense of Abner by the nar rator gives the reader a better understanding of Abnerââ¬â¢s characteristics and actions. When the point of views shifts into Sartyââ¬â¢s thoughts, Sarty does not necessarily defend his fatherââ¬â¢s actions, knowing they are wrong, but instead tries to understand them. From the beginning of the story, when Sarty is asked to testify in the case involving his father and Mr. Harris, Sarty is conflicted. He knows he should be honest and tell the truth, but he knows loyalty is vital to his father. In the end, he chooses to follow his fatherââ¬â¢s commands. However, as Sarty matures he chooses to value honesty over loyalty which ends up costing his fatherââ¬â¢s life. Themes of ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠greatly submerge from Faulknerââ¬â¢s use of point of view. One theme in particular is the theme of Sartyââ¬â¢s search for peace. Relating back to the courtroom case, Sarty is loyal to his father. His loyalty to his father brings only violence within his family and confli ct within himself. Sarty finds no escape from the vicious environment he is surrounded in until they arrive at Major de Spainââ¬â¢s house. At this point the point of view shifts in and out between Sartyââ¬â¢s thoughts and the narrator. ââ¬Å"Hitââ¬â¢s big as a courthouse he thought quietly; with a surge of peace and joyâ⬠¦They are safe from him.People whose lives are a part of this peace and dignity are beyond his touchâ⬠¦the spell of this peace and dignity rendering even the barns and stable and cribs which belong to it impervious to the puny flames he might contriveâ⬠¦Maybe he will feel it too. Maybe it will even change him now from what maybe he couldnââ¬â¢t help but be. â⬠(Faulkner 159). Sarty believes at this point he will find peace at last, he has escaped violence, and that his father will change. He believes his father will see that the house is too magnificent to destroy. However, the size of the house does not faze his father.Only a few momen ts later Abner purposely steps in horse manure, walks into the house, and soils an expensive rug. Faulknerââ¬â¢s use of point of view is critical to the development of the plot of the story. By entering Sartyââ¬â¢s mind the reader understands how he is developing. The narrator aids in the plot build-up by describing the events occurring in the story. The reader learns at the beginning of the story (scene of courtroom) that Sarty is already conflicted between family loyalty and his own morals. At this point the reader understands that Sarty will eventually have to choose between family loyalty and his own morals. All of this sets up the plot of the story due to the fact that the climax of the story is Sarty's final decision of this confliction. He struggles with this confliction throughout the story which first establishes itself at the beginning in the courtroom. Sartyââ¬â¢s decision to tell Major de Spain of his fatherââ¬â¢s plan to burn his barn exposes his ultimate cho ice of his own morals over family loyalty. Major de Spain shoots and kills his father because of Sarty's warning that Abner was going to burn his barn. It is only after Abnerââ¬â¢s death when Sarty finds something related to, but not quite peace.Although there will be no more fires, lies, beatings, and violence, his father is no more as well. The use of point of view is crucial to William Faulknerââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠. Point of view helps the reader to learn who the characters are and the reasons behind their actions, provides a better insight to the themes of the story, and supports plot development. Without the unique use of point of view it would be very difficult to understand the story because ââ¬Å"the narrator can do for Sarty what the young Sarty cannot: he understands Abner's anti-social behavior, his angerâ⬠¦ an tell the truth about Abner's firesâ⬠¦ â⬠(Yunis 6). The use of point of view in this intricate form provides deeper ins ight to the story as a whole.Works Cited Faulkner, William. ââ¬Å"Barn Burning. â⬠Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing. Critically evaluate theories of nationalism and its relationship with Essay
Critically evaluate theories of nationalism and its relationship with racism - Essay Example . . Where the sentiment of nationality exists in any force, there is prima facie case for uniting all the members of the nationality under the same government, and a government to themselves apart.â⬠Nationalism cannot be termed as either good or bad, just like the phenomena of socialism, capitalism, or imperialism. Nonetheless, in a good nationality, citizens strive to ensure that their nation is maintained. On the other hand, in bad nationalism, a nation only considers its superiority, and acts against other nationalities in order to remain superior (Smith 2010). Examples of past leaders who perpetuated bad nationality include Slobodan Milosevic and Adolf Hitler. Therefore, nationality is a factor that can cause unification or lead to disintegration. Today, there are various theories of nationalism, which attempt to explain the phenomenon of nationality in different contexts. According to Conversi (1995), these theories can be divided into different categories, namely the ethn o-symbolic, transactional, and homeostatic. However, this categorization was made basing on those theories, which put an emphasis on the boundary mechanisms of nations. Here, Conversi dismisses the traditional categorizations of instrumentalism and primordialism, since these might not apply to modern nationalism (Conversi 1995). Primordialist and sociobiological theories of nationalism are some of the universal theories applied to nationalism. In the primordialist perspective, it is believed that nationalism confers some form of group identity to the members of a nation. A nation is compared to a society, and therefore, just like the society, a nation is characterized by irrational attachments of people, which are based on race, blood, language, among others. Today, most countries, especially those in the third world, have embraced their group identities, which are evident in their communities and ethnic groups. Geertz was a contributor to the theory of primordialism. According to G eertz, the factor of identity in the primordialist approach is natural. These identities are coercive, therefore, cannot be understood basing on peopleââ¬â¢s social interactions. Finally, he asserted that these identities base on affection and might make the involved people sentimental (Conversi 1995). Another contributor to the primordialist approach was Harold Isaacs. According to Harold, people are normally born into a specific group of people or society at a particular time in history. Therefore, upon being born, each person acquires an identity, similar to that of the group in which they are born. Harold also identified various elements of the identity, which an individual gains. First, he identified the physical factors of skin color, hair type, body size, and type of face, among others. Secondly, he identified the name that is given to an individual. Mostly, people are given family names, and other names common in their group. In addition, a personââ¬â¢s first language identifies them with a specific group of people. Harold also identified the elements of religion, culture, nationality, or ethnic affiliation, the geography of a personââ¬â¢s area of birth, and the history of the group a person is born into, as factors, which grant a person a form of identity (Harris 2009). On the other hand, the sociobiological approach bases on human behavior, in its explanation of nationalism. This bases on three factors, namely, kin selection, reciprocity, and coercion to investigate human
